How long after bariatric surgery will I have to be out of work?
This varies depending on your job, but in general patients can go back to a desk job in 10-14 days. For those performing manual labor, police officers, or nurses who have to move patients, it may be up to 6 weeks.
When can I start exercising again after surgery?
We encourage patients to begin a walking or exercise bike regimen as soon as they go home, with a goal of 30 minutes of aerobic exercise 4-5 days per week. Strength training should not be started until 4-6 weeks following surgery to allow healing of the muscles in your abdominal wall.
Does type 2 diabetes make surgery riskier?
There is a slight increase in risk with type two diabetes, although this is usually very small. Depending on other factors, we will often ask for a cardiac stress test pre-operatively since diabetics are more prone to silent heart disease.
Will I lose my hair after bariatric surgery?
Some hair loss is unavoidable, but this can be minimized by taking in adequate daily protein and vitamins.
