Look for a non-surgical weight loss solution? Try the Orbera Gastric Balloon!
It’s hard to keep your weight down. As you know, diet and exercise are not enough. At Alabama Surgical Associates in Huntsville, AL, we use the Orbera® Gastric Balloon to help our patients lose the weight, and keep it off. It’s all part of the Orbera® Managed Weight Loss System and it helps you lose the weight without surgery.
What is the Orbera® Balloon?
The Orbera® Balloon System is a non-surgical weight-loss system. The procedure uses a gastric balloon to, basically, fill up your stomach. It’s basically the same principle as shrinking your stomach with a surgical gastric bypass, without the surgery!
How does a Gastric Balloon help me lose weight?
After they have put the balloon in place, Dr. Foreman or Dr. Doucette will fill the gastric balloon with saline solution and it takes up space in your stomach. Since the space in your stomach is smaller, less food will make you feel full. The balloon also slows your digestion. Patients lose most of their weight during the first three months of the program, but the Orbera® Balloon stays in place for six months. Over that time, your body becomes accustomed to the right amount of food to maintain your now lower weight.
Would I be a candidate for the Orbera® Balloon?
Because the Orbera® weight-loss system is non-surgical, qualifying for the program is pretty straightforward. You must:
- Be an adult
- Have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30-40
- Be willing to participate in a medically supervised program
What is the average amount of weight people lose?
Based on FDA studies, patients using the Orbera® weight-loss system lost an average of 21.8 pounds (10.2% of their body weight) after the device had been in place for six months. This was higher than individuals place on behavior modification programs, who lost an average of 7.0 pounds (3.3% of their body weight) over the year. Results will vary between individuals
Are people able to keep the weight off?
Research from the FDA studies show that three months after the balloon was removed (nine months after initial placement), patients maintained an average weight loss of 19.4 pounds weight.
Before the procedure begins, a diagnostic endoscopy is done at our Huntsville, AL surgical center to ensure that it’s safe to perform the procedure. Next, you are mildly sedated.
The deflated gastric balloon is then inserted into your mouth, down through the esophagus, and into the stomach. This part of the procedure is done using a flexible camera (an endoscope). Once the balloon is in your stomach, it is filled with a sterile saline solution until it is about the size of a grapefruit. Afterward, the endoscope and filling tube are removed and the balloon self-seals.
The entire procedure takes just 20-30 minutes. After you recover from sedation, you head home to begin your weight loss journey.
After six months, your surgeon will deflate and remove the balloon the reverse of the way it was placed. Your body simply absorbs or passes the sterile saline solution.
Will I receive other help to keep the weight off?
Beyond the gastric balloon, the Orbera® weight-loss system involves a support team: a dietician, fitness trainer, psychologist, and exercise psychologist. This team helps you ingrain the habits of exercise and the smaller portion sizes that your body adjusted to with the Orbera® Balloon. Your support team, with the help of the Orbera® Coach (an online and Smartphone app), will help you achieve and maintain your weight loss goals for 6 months after the balloon is removed.
